Why does SuperDre have a Radio Flyer wagon?
June 22, 2010
This is for all those ADULTS who say us young folk don’t ever “do anything”…well I assure you, we do, sometimes it just goes unnoticed. Most of you have been wondering why I’ve been toting around a Radio Flyer wagon with me taking pics all over the place…well…I’m about to tell you…
I’m currently working with United Way’s Schools of Hope program to collect books for Grand Rapids Public Schools. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Schools of Hope, basically, the main goal is to close the 3rd grade reading achievement gap between the highest performing districts in Kent County and Grand Rapids Public Schools. In addition to that task, they also have a waiting list of children who need reading tutors. I don’t think I need to explain in detail why reading is important. I also don’t think I need to explain why it’s important that we get our schools in the Grand Rapids city limits in order…you ALL know it’s a MAJOR pet peeve of mine.
What makes this campaign even more awesome is that Radio Flyer actually donated red wagons to us for free to place in various locations around the greater Grand Rapids area to collect the books!! HUGE shout out to Radio Flyer for doing that.
WHAT WE NEED:
We need new or gently-used children’s books grade levels kindergarten through 3rd grade
WHERE CAN YOU TAKE THEM:
There are various locations around the city and some venues are even offering specials for those who drop off books. My SuperDreWagon (lol) is placed at none other than Billy’s Lounge in Eastown. You can just place the books in the wagon. I’ll be checking the wagon a couple of times per week to empty it. The address for Billy’s Lounge is 1437 Wealthy St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI.
HOW LONG THE CAMPAIGN LASTS:
The campaign ends July 3rd with the wagons, but by no means is the cause over. Stay tuned for more community outreach activities myself and other local musicians around the city will be doing over the summer to help out GRPS before the school year begins. Also, Schools of Hope offers a great tutoring program that is ALWAYS in need of new tutors so that opportunity is available as well.
Some links for ya:
Lastly, here are a few pictures of the SuperWagon and our first donors!
So thank you to all the “scenesters” who brought out books already…this is just the beginning, we’ve got a couple of weeks to go, so let’s make this happen!
xoxo,
SuperDre
